Interview Wooyoung - Men's Health July 2012

Jang Wooyoung’s personal challenge outside of 2PM.
In July 2012, 2PM’s Wooyoung transforms into Jang Wooyoung. He’s going to deal with the huge world on his own, without the shield that is the nation’s best idol group. Perhaps he’s been dreaming of this day ever since he was dancing overnight, kindling his hopes back in the boyhood. He developed calluses on his palms and kept on lifting the barbell until his arms began to shake so that he would not forget that resolution. He’s the kind of person who devotes all of his strength to the goal he’s set. So now that he’s facing another challenge, isn’t the warrior image totally appropriate?
I got interested in having a muscular body after having watched the movie “Ninja Assassin”. I heard that in order to prepare for the movie Rain hyung lost a great amount of weight and trained a lot. There are different types of bodies, but I really wanted to try and make the kind of body Rain hyung showcased in the movie – lean but strong.
Something about him
The song that recently you enjoy the most: Justin Timberlake’s “All Over Again”
The restaurant Wooyoung visits frequently: Homyeondang (호면당)
If you had about a month-long vacation: I would like to go to Hawaii.
Something you do in summer all the time: Catching mosquitoes.
Special interest that others don’t know about: Interior
Something new that you’d like to learn: Architecture
My personal charm that appeals to the opposite sex: Friendliness
A woman that attracts you: Pretty, good-natured, sexy, wise, with a sense of responsibility and nice manners towards parents
The best gift I’ve ever received: My parents giving birth to me and raising me up
The gift you want to give to your parents no matter what: A trip abroad
I’m still lacking in so many ways. Dancing, singing, acting – everything is difficult. In order to constantly develop oneself, one has but to try. I think that effort has no limits or boundaries. I’m only a person who’s trying to do everything well.

Body sculpted with resolution
Not every man is endowed with the kind of muscles he desires. It is not easy. Even for an idol, who dances overnight and shines on stage, it is not easy to acquire splendidly developed deltoid muscle or the so-called chocolate abs. Whether it is a star or an ordinary person – everyone is equal in terms of body, so Wooyoung was not so much interested in having a “bulky” stature. Until he wished for the muscles for the first time. “I wanted to make a new transformation as Jang Wooyoung,” he said he wanted to try changing himself while preparing for his solo album.
Naturally, fans love him even if his body is not sculpted to the tiniest details, because even among 2PM he’s the Wooyoungie with a tremendous fandom behind his back. The thing he wanted to acquire through exercising was a strong body and even a stronger mind. He began making efforts for his body since the beginning of this year. Even though he’s been busy, it’s already been 6 months since he began working out regularly whenever he had some spare time. And really for the first time, becoming a cover model was the training result that wasn’t even on his to-do list. “I think that effort has no limits or boundaries,” – it is what he said before he left right after he has succeeded in this challenge.
When did you get interested in building your body?
Right after having watched the movie “Ninja Assassin”. I heard that in order to prepare for the movie Rain hyung lost a great amount of weight and trained a lot. There are different types of bodies, but I really wanted to try and make the kind of body Rain hyung showcased in the movie – lean but strong.
Did you build your body for the solo album activities?
Solo album is a great transition personally and for 2PM as a group. As far as this attempt is concerned I wanted to make a new transformation as “Jang Wooyoung”. Up until now compared to the other members I didn’t have much of a training drive, so with this opportunity I wanted to try and make a diligent change.
What was your training method?
I increased the amount of training little by little ever since the beginning of the year. Even though I had a busy schedule, I exercised whenever I had some spare time. As expected, the most important thing about exercising is consistency.
Weren’t there any obstacles?
Trainer hyungs would always say “You’re gonna build your body really fast.” But at that time I couldn’t give my best to it. Therefore, this time the challenge was a lot more meaningful on a personal level.
You were also really busy overseas.
That’s why it was really hard to regulate my diet. At first I increased my muscle mass with a protein-based diet. I tried to follow the diet as much as possible overseas as well. In order to prepare for the photo shoot a week before it I began losing weight in order to give my body this lean visual feeling.
Is there anything you’ve gained since your body got better?
Consistent and regular training in itself is enough to trigger personal development. My clothes size got larger, and even though it was hard to juggle busy schedule and training at the same time, as I kept my efforts constant, I enjoyed feeling my body getting stronger and more well-balanced.
What did you think of the other members becoming cover models?
Since 2AM and 2PM members like sports, I always get to see them exercise. But once they get the “Men’s Health” cover challenge, everyone gets lost in fierce preparations with lots of training and a strict diet. I was really touched seeing them appear on the cover after having prepared so much. Everyone was great and impressive without exception.
Have you always liked sports?
Back in my school days I like football, but once I decided to become a singer, I wasn’t able to play it as much as before. It was because in case of an injury I would not have been able to train anymore. Lately I’ve got slightly interested in basketball.
Is there a song you listen frequently to while training?
Will.I.Am’s “T.H.E.”
What is tiresome?
Looking at Wooyoung one remembers the movie “Billy Elliot” – the story of a boy from a coal-mining town in the middle of a strike crisis who becomes the best ballet-dancer despite his father’s strong opposition. If we were to move the scene of this story from England to Busan, instead of Billy we would see Wooyoung standing there. With a talent for dance and a big dream, he said he waited for his father to change his mind, as Wooyoung would write letters every day in order to persuade him. He did so, because he didn’t want to run away, he wanted to stand there bravely and get acknowledged. Whether it is Billy’s tale of entering the best ballet school in London, or Wooyoung’s story of entering JYP entertainment after having placed 1st at the audition and having changed his father’s mind – both stories are very touching.
“Why do you like dance so much?”
After giving it a little bit of thought, he answers: “I’m the happiest when I dance. I don’t know why.”
It’s a simple and slightly banal answer, but his eyes seem to be saying “It is really true that you don’t know the reason when you like something so much it’s crazy.”
When one focuses more on the objective rather than on hardships, those hardships become the present of the days past. He’s still young enough to expect a lot more from life, but I dare to think that he’s already half-way there towards the success just by having a spirit that focuses on the goal and relentlessly works towards it without a sign of weariness.

What are your personal strong point and weak point?
My strong point is that I enjoy what I do, because I love music and dance so much.  My weak point is that I think too much.
Why do you like dancing?
Because I feel the happiest when I dance.
They say that dance practice standards are close to military discipline. Are there any interesting episodes from the training days?
Rather than the military discipline, I’d say it was a “reckless” discipline (laughs). In my high school days, I used to dance until 1 or 2 am at our local civic center’s outdoor stage all alone on cold winter nights. Back then all I knew was dancing, and since I wanted to dance so much, there was nothing I would worry about and nothing I would be scared of. I remember the taxi drivers would come and look at me dance from time to time.
What was your driving force when you tried to win against your father’s strong opposition?
My father really was against me becoming a singer. But I knew what I wanted to do, and I knew exactly what I could do, so I also wanted to become a son my father would be very proud of. Instead of running away, I bravely wanted to be acknowledged, so I endlessly tried to persuade my father.
What do we need to do in order to dance as well as Wooyoung?
I’m still lacking in so many ways. Dancing, singing, acting – everything is difficult. In order to constantly develop oneself, one has but to try. I think that effort has no limits or boundaries. I’m only a person who’s trying to do everything well.
You seem to be very determined and manly.
It’s hard to say it just like that. I’m very curt on the outside. But once you get close to me, I do have cute charm. When you get to know me, I do think a lot, and I worry a lot. And I also want to do everything “perfectly”.
They say that sons are like their fathers…
I’m a lot like my father. Not only the appearance, our characters are similar as well. Father always tells me to do my best so that I would have no regrets. It’s the biggest lesson I’ve received in my life.
We’re curious about the solo album.
Solo album has been my dream since a long time ago. All the members supported me so I prepared it even more diligently. I didn’t write any song, but in order to show Jang Wooyoung I tried my best participating in the concept making and other processes related to the album activities.
You’re very active in Japan. What’s the difference between Korean and Japanese music markets?
Record album! Japanese still have this culture of treasuring hard-copy albums of their favourite artists.
Don’t you want to expand your activities beyond the field of music?
I’ve debuted as an actor in “Dream High”. I felt that being an actor is just as appealing as being a singer. So I’m really greedy when it comes to acting, but for now I want to show the solo singer “Jang Wooyoung” and be acknowledged for it.
What’s your biggest worry right now?
I want to improve my singing skills.
What path you’d like to take in the future?
Music, movies, drama and so on… Producing anything like that is a fascinating job. I want to study more, work hard and become a producer.

"2PM’s Chansung to open his own fitness center"

Chansung’s fitness center will be opening its doors in early July at Nonhyeon-dong, Seoul. Chansung plans to co-operate the fitness center with trainer, Hwang Moh, who has helped him since his debut in 2008. Chansung has been praised as one of the hottest ‘beastly idols’ for his muscular and tall figure, even featuring in renowned magazines like ‘Men’s Health‘ and offering helpful advice on shows about fitness.

2PM Relates to Park Jin Young’s Advice on ‘K-Pop Star’

2PM said they related a lot to their producer Park Jin Young’s advice on SBS’ K-Pop Star.

The group held a press conference before its May 30 concert for 6 Beautiful Days in Budokan.

Junsu said to a question asking what the members thought about Park Jin Young’s advice on K-Pop Star, “Because we grew up under [Park] Jin Young hyung’s care, we related a lot to K-Pop Star. I realized he still says the same things.”

He added, “Of course, the ‘half air, half sound’ bit that Jin Young hyung chooses to stress may be exact data, but people pick up skills at different paces and later on they come up with their own methods. I think it’s nice to learn from Jin Young hyung from the start, since he knows a lot.”

Park Jin Young is, of course, the head of JYP Entertainment and producer of 2PM. He’s produced many big teams such as 2PM, Wonder Girls, 2AM, miss A and JJ Project, proving his skills not only as a singer but as a producer. He previously appeared on SBS’ audition program K-Pop Star as a judge to deliver sharp pointers and advice.

2PM held its six Budokan concerts on May 24, 25, 28, 29, 30 and 31. The Budokan can hold more than 10,000 people, and is known as the ‘stage of every singer’s dreams’ among Japanese singers.

[NEWS] 2PM Writes New K-Pop History with Its Six Day Budokan Concert

2PM set the Budokan on fire with its passionate songs and strong performances. The six men, armed with their dynamic performances and delightful airs, pitched not only Budokan, but the entire country of Japan into a passionate frenzy. 2PM thus proved that it was the biggest idol in the country. It danced while singing live, and made its fans laugh by conversing with them in Japanese. Because the members were never fearful of ruining their images, they stepped closer to their fans by laughing, gossiping and putting on weird antics. The group presented its fans with a mix of Korean and Japanese hits including Tired of Waiting, I Hate You, Hot, Take Off, 10 Out of 10, Hands Up and I Can’t. The audience not only sang along to the Japanese hits, but also the Korean hits in Korean. Some even danced along to the main moves for each song, expressing their joy. Everyone remained standing the entire time and sent in their support with song and dance alike. The main point of each concert was actually the different the solo performances put on every day that shone with each member’s color. Starting with Chansung on May 24, Taecyeon performed on May 25, Wooyoung on May 28, Nichkhun on May 29, Junsu on May 30 and lastly, Junho on May 31. Taecyeon, Junsu and Junho tried to deliver their emotions through songs they had written for the performance. Taecyeon especially received much applause and support for his performance of his first self-written piece, as he met expectations with a passionate performance despite his injured arm. Chansung chose to perform a musical-like contemporary dance piece, while Nichkhun sang out Bruno Mars’ Just the Way You Are along with a piano accompaniment. Wooyoung sang Nakashima Mika’s Orion in Japanese, Junsu performed a song he wrote while thinking of his father and Junho left a big impression with his drumming skills and self-written song. The performance and music video for the Japanese single Beautiful, which will be released on June 6, was then revealed for the first time during the concert. Rose petals fell from the air during the performance and heightened anticipation on 2PM’s upcoming album. The 2PM in red suits perfectly fit the image of ′beast-dol′. The group′s new chair dance was reminiscent of the group’s dances in its beginnings when it was famous as an ‘acrobatic’ dance group, and the waves, grooves and detailed hand motions were wild and sexy. They were thus reborn as the ‘sexy beast-dols’. The concerts by the five-year-old group 2PM proved how much it had matured throughout its career, and also opened up new possibilities for the future. The group planted great expectations by conveying its goal that it would color Japan in its style. A fan who cheered for the group all throughout the concert said, “I came to like 2PM because it had different charms from other Korean idol groups. I was satisfied [with the concert] because the members not only danced and sang, but also acted cute in front of the fans, making them feel like pros and like friends at the same time.” The concerts also proved 2PM’s ticket power by selling out as soon as sales started. For those fans who weren’t able to attend the Budokan concert, 2PM plans to hold additional concerts at the Yokohama Arena from June 5-6.

2PM - Caribbean Bay Summer 2012

Caribbean Bay Summer 2012

Official 3rd Year with 2PM and this time with missA

Suzy!

Real Hot Summer!!!!!

Interview with global.mnet

Why six days? Is there any special meaning in performing for six days?

Taecyeon: Each of the six members will perform with their own concepts for each day. Every member has been given a day, and on that day that member will be performing his solo performance. It’s special in that there are specific days for each member. I think we’ve started to feel more responsible for the concerts since we’re preparing solo performances. That’s what makes this concert different from our others.

How is Taecyeon’s arm? Will it prove difficult for him to perform?

His arm was fractured while arm wrestling. We had some time in between our schedules so we decided to arm wrestle each other, but his bone ended up breaking.

The doctor said that his biceps and triceps had expanded, pressed on the bone and broke it. The doctor added that people with a lot of muscle shouldn’t be arm wrestling. (Laugh) He can’t dance because he’s had surgery and he has metal pins in his arm. He does, however, plan to entertain in different ways other than dance to show the hard work he’s put in the concert.

You debuted in Japan in 2010; how do you think you became so popular in such a short time?

Taecyeon: It’s embarrassing to be saying this myself, but we were the first ‘beast-dols’ in Korea. A lot of people believed our strong performances and our manliness were our concept.

I think in Japan since we’ve come out with a beastly concept, more people are starting to show interest. I think they’re interested because we have a concept originally not found in Japan, and I think they love us because we work hard.

Any difficulties going back and forth between Korea and Japan?

Junsu: We’ve become neglectful of promotions in Korea since we’ve concentrated more on Japan promotions, but we’re preparing for a comeback this year. We’re working hard for the album to come, so please look forward to it. We’ll be a 2PM that is very active in Korea.

How did you feel after seeing the members’ solo performances?

Wooyoung: First, everyone tried many different things. Chansung prepared a lot of different types of performances to show something other than song or dance.

We practiced songs in Japanese for our Japanese fans, and I think we learned a lot in the process. It wasn’t easy, but since we learned a lot the fans cheered for us and showed their support. We’re always thankful. I’m looking forward to the two remaining concerts.

When were all six of you moved the most during the concert?

The Budokan has lights on the ceiling that come on during the encore performance, and it has a special meaning. The lights are called ‘cool rays’, and they’re only turned on when all of the seats are filled. We were touched when we saw the lights come on during our encore performance.

What did Park Jin Young say about the concerts?

Taecyeon: [Park] Jin Young hyung is busy promoting You’re the One. He’s also busy with our company’s rookies JJ Project. He hasn’t seen the Budokan performances yet, but when we hold a concert in Korea I think he’ll scold us a lot. (Laugh)

All K-Pop singers in Japan have their own meaningful record. What do you think 2PM’s meaningful record could be?

Wooyoung: I don’t think we can say we’ve set a record in any standard because there are so many K-Pop singers that are more brilliant than we are. We believe that our performing in the Budokan for six days is a great memory and a record in itself.

We hope we can perform on bigger stages in the future such as that in the Tokyo Dome. We’ll take it step by step without any rush.

SHINee will be performing in Yoyogi today, while Shinhwa will be performing in Yokohama. It’s rare for Korean singers to perform so close in Tokyo at the same time; how do you think 2PM is different?

Wooyoung: I think it’s important that we revealed our new album Beautiful. It’s an honor to be performing at the Budokan itself, but I think we’re taking on new challenges by showing how we’re using stage effects and the like for our new album. I hope many people start to notice the small details.

We’re all friendly rivals; we’ll be performing with such great seniors on the same day, and it’s a great chance to have more people know about Korea. We plan to stand onstage with Korean pride and try to have our songs be known to more people.

How do you think 2PM is doing?

Taecyeon: We always work hard for our dreams. When we made our debut, we wanted to be acknowledged for having a specific 2PM brand of music among everyone watching us. The same goes for now. We feel we’re maturing little by little, but there are still so many great people, and we keep thinking we’ll have to work harder to become great singers since Jin Young hyung is right above us.
